The first biography of the artist and writer Brenda Chamberlain chronicles a life strongly affected by the places in which she lived, most famously Bardsey Island and the Greek island of Hydra. Chamberlain published a compelling body of literary work and held solo exhibitions in London and Wales. Her brilliance was mirrored in the journey of her own life, including marriage to fellow artist and Royal Academy student, John Petts; a long relationship with Jean Van der Bijl, and her eventual journey to Hydra, where she lived for many years before returning to Bangor, Wales.
Jill Piercy is an exhibition curator, consultant and writer, specialising in contemporary art and craft. For six years she was Art and Craft Officer for the National Eisteddfod of Wales and has curated three exhibitions of Brenda Chamberlain’s work. Here, she draws upon extensive research gathered from public and private collections and interviews with Chamberlain’s friends in Britain, Germany and Greece.
