Celebrating 100 years: The Panel Decides: How ‘Good’ was Iris Murdoch?

Iris Murdoch has habitually divided audiences: adored by devoted readers and hailed by a global body of scholarship, her work has also been challenged by readers and critics alike. Join Murdoch specialist Anne Rowe, international best-selling crime writer Sophie Hannah, and Professors Avril Horner and Bran Nicol to discuss how credible it is to describe Iris Murdoch as one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers and thinkers. Each panellist will explain and illustrate what they think makes her novels good – or sometimes bad – and, most importantly, discuss what legacy her writing has left to the twenty-first century.

Anne Rowe is author of Iris Murdoch: Writers and Their Work (2019)Sophie Hannah claims Murdoch as an inspiration and has written the introduction to the  Vintage celebratory edition of The Black Prince (2019), Avril Horner is co-editor of Living on paper: Letters from Iris Murdoch 1934-1995 (2015), and Bran Nicol is author of Iris Murdoch: The Retrospective Fiction (1999).
