Matt Johnson and John Sutherland – Twenty-First Century Policing, Fact and Fiction

Author, Matt Johnson served as a police officer for 21 years. He was present at the 1982 Regents Park bombing and, in 1984, escorted his mortally-wounded friend, Yvonne Fletcher, to hospital at the start of the Libyan Peoples’ Bureau siege.

Chief Superintendent John Sutherland was a rising star in the Metropolitan Police who was in charge of policing the London Borough of Southwark, one of the most challenging roles in UK policing.

Matt and John both enjoyed exciting careers. They saved lives and helped to take dangerous people off the streets. They experienced life in a unique public service that is exposed on a daily basis to terror and tragedy, and, yet, it is a service that we, the public expect to never fail in its duty to protect us from evil.

Matt and John both broke. Matt due to PTSD, John suffered a major breakdown and consequent battle with a crippling depression. Both are recovering. Both turned to writing as a means to facilitate that recovery, Matt through fiction, John through a personal memoir. Both achieved incredible success.

Wicked Game, by Matt Johnson was listed for the 2016 Crime Writers Association John Creasey New-Blood Dagger award and was the 2016 highest-rated debut novel on Amazon.

Blue – A memoir, by John Sutherland, released just this year, reached No.4 in the Sunday Times Best-sellers list.

Time spent in the company of these two writers should offer you a moving, thought-provoking and very personal insight into what it is to be a police officer in Britain today.
