Dai Smith: Merthyr: a crucible of modern Wales and the touchstone of Aberfan

Dai Smith interrogates Joe England’s claim that Merthyr was the crucible in the development of Wales as a country in the nineteenth Century. Moving on a century, he asks why Huw Lewis’s moving memoir of growing up in Aberfan in the 1960s and 70s, The Song of the Skylark, has so much to say about the country we have lost and may now have an opportunity to rebuild again.
