‘Last night I dreamed I went to Mandalay again’
Anne Rowe explores the allure of houses in literature with novelists Jane Blank (The Shadow of Nanteos), Stuart Thurton (The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle) and Vesna Goldsworthy (Gorsky and Monsieur Ka)
This year celebrates the eightieth anniversary of the publication of Rebecca which gave us one of the most memorable houses in literature. Great characters usually get all the credit, but our panel will explore the houses they inhabit, which are often just as interesting and can provide an opportunity to go even deeper into a story. After all, what would some of your favourite novels be without the ancient farmhouses, crumbling castles, and estates overlooking a body of water whose waves crash against the rocks at night?
